"You see, I don't believe that libraries should be drab places where people sit in silence, that has been the main reason for our policy of employing wild animals as librarians."

Dream Big--READ!
This year's themes for Summer Reading are "Dream Big--Read!" for children, "Own the Night" for teens, and "Between the Covers" for adults. This year we are returning to recording pages and books read (depending upon the age group) for weekly prizes. We will also have a program for adults (complete with weekly reading logs and one weekly prize winner)!
Mark your calendars for our Summer Reading kick-off event! Take a magical journey through your dream with Magician Tom Yurasits on June 18th at 7PM. You can also make s'mores, be a contestant in Hellertown's Next Top Monster, build a Franken Toy, learn about dream interpretation, join us for Ladies Night and much more! By the end of May there will be a complete calendar of events with instructions for the Summer Reading Club out in the library and on the website. Lower Saucon Township--Follow Your Tax Dollars
If you have not heard about the Saucon Valley Library Taskforce, listen up! The Saucon Valley Library Task Force was formed to explore the feasibility of consolidating library services for both Lower Saucon Township and Hellertown Borough residents at the Hellertown Area Library. On April 12, the Taskforce presented some preliminary findings in a public forum.
Facts: Currently, Lower Saucon tax dollars support the Bethlehem Area Public Library. The Hellertown Area Library receives no support from Lower Saucon Township. LST patrons checked out 30,637 materials in 2011 from Hellertown (35% of total checkouts). LST patrons checked out 34,682 materials from BAPL (4% of total checkouts). Lower Saucon Township officials spend $183,000.00 of your tax dollars for library service at BAPL. The BAPL budget of almost $3 million includes $2.2 million in wages and benefits.
If you would like more information about the findings, what this means for library service, or what you can do to let your council know that you use and support the Hellertown Area Library, please ask! This is YOUR money, take the time to learn about where it goes and how it is spent.
